The original stair created awkward dead corners and had little relationship with the surrounding room, making the area visually unresolved and difficult to use.

Redirecting the stair creates a new external corridor, while the space below becomes a custom bookcase, platform and reading area.Designer: Lu Haining

The client wanted the stair renovated to improve circulation, make better use of the unused areas and raise the overall quality of the interior.
The stair direction is changed first, creating a new external corridor and a clearer route through the space.
The area below the corridor, which would otherwise remain unused, becomes a continuous custom bookcase with integrated display and storage.
A raised platform in front of the bookcase creates a place to sit, read and pause. Stair, corridor, furniture and platform become one system, turning circulation space into a useful part of everyday life.
